Famous for its hippo and duck character, Silentnight have become the largest manufacturers of beds in the UK. Located in Barnoldswick Silentnight produce over 1800 beds a day and amazingly 1 silentnight bed is sold every 90 seconds.
The company was originally setup in Skipton in 1945 under the name of Clarkes mattresses limited, as just a mattress manufacturer, but as divan beds became more popular Clarkes soon went into the production of divan beds and moved to its current location at Barnoldswick.
In 1951 Clarks changed its name to Silentnight Group Limited and was soon producing over 400 beds a month.
After much research and development in the 1980s Silentnight launched its own spring system, not only to improve the quality of its beds but to become uniquely different from its competitors and cement Silentnight as the leading manufacturer of beds in the country.
The spring system was named the ultimate spring system and a major advertising campaign soon followed featuring the now famous hippo and duck characters that were used to emphasise the spring systems no roll together qualities.
This spring system slowly improved over the decades and is currently known today as the miracoil spring system.
Due to Silentnights innovative and creative nature a host of new additions have been added to the range over the years, the most widely received has been its addition to the children’s market “my first bed” This unique kids bed has a host of different style, comfort and accessory options to allow each bed a personality all of it’s own, but Silentnight havn’t stopped there and are currently launching a major advertising campaign based on the way we use our beds.
