Outlast Fabric

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Outlast® is a fantastic material which regulates your body heat whilst you sleep to keep you at a comfortable temperature. Outlast® was originally developed for NASA to protect the astronauts from temperature fluctuations, now it has many different applications, such as underwear, footwear and even specialist applications such as bulletproof vests!

Outlast® works by absorbing excess body heat when you create it, and releases it when you need it. By doing this you will sweat less when your surrounding temperature is too hot, and you will warm up quicker when your surrounding temperature is too cold, keeping you in the bed at a comfortable temperature. Outlast® has changed the way people sleep worldwide and has been awarded with the seal of “Certified Space Technology™”.

One of our mattresses that have the Outlast® fabric on them is the Bedstar Outlast® Mattress. It is a 20cm deep mattress and features 5cm of 55kilo memory foam and 15cm of high density support foam. The mattress is delivered to you vacuum packed, which means that your mattress will be 100% hygienic and also maneuvering the mattress into your room of choice will be a lot easier, which is perfect if you have a house with narrow corridors or need to position the mattress in a loft bedroom.

The Bedstar Outlast® is available in stock now with free next day delivery, so you don’t need to wait long to feel the full benefits of an Outlast® mattress.

Uncomfortable Beds

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

If you’re having problems with an uncomfortable bed, it may be time to take the plunge and invest in a new bed or mattress! Luckily, bedstar is here to help with our series of bed buying guides designed to make sure you get the best sleep possible.

You spend over half of your life in bed, so it’s worth spending a bit of time to make sure that you choose the right product when buying beds online. Everyone’s needs are different, so it’s worth exploring our extensive range of beds and mattresses to find the right product to suit your needs.

The London Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service believe that an uncomfortable bed may cost people up to an hour’s good sleep a night, so what should you be looking for when you buy a new bed online.

Bed Buying Points

The best bed for your needs isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. However, it is worth spending as much as you can afford on a good mattress.

With a bit of care and love, a mattress will last for roughly 8-10 years. Regular use may see your bed deteriorate by as much as 75% from its original condition during this timeframe.

Your bed is an important investment, so consider this fact. For every £100 you spend on a bed, it represents just 2.7p a night over 10 years. Not bad value when you look at it that way.

Older beds can be less hygienic, as people sweat out as much as a full pint of fluid a night. Your mattress will also be full of house dust mites too.

A further point to consider is space, especially if you share your bed with a partner. While a double bed may be fine, you could buy a king size bed to give yourself more room to stretch during the night.

Why Do We Have Dreams?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

We are all dreamers; whether it’s daydreaming while at work, or having unique and interesting dreams when we sleep. Dreaming is still one of the great ‘unsolved’ mysteries of science however. There is still a lot of research being conducted around dreaming, and the biggest question of all – ‘Why Do We Dream’ remains unanswered. The only way to study dreams, even now, is to ask the dreamer themselves. However, one thing we know for sure is that the vast majority of humans dream every night of their lives.

Some scientists and researchers believe that dreaming may have evolved for physiological reasons and is linked neuronal activity in the brain that occurs when we sleep. Many believe the key lies in further study into REM sleep, while others suggest that dreams are simply a meaningless by-product of this complex biological process.

One of the leading authorities on dreaming, Rosalind Cartwright PhD, believes that dreams are a way of the brain incorporating memories, solving problems and dealing with emotions. As such, Dr. Cartwright (a Professor and Chairman of Psychology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago) believes that dreams are important part of our emotional health.

When studying men’s dreams, scientists found that 70% of the characters that appeared in their dreams were other men. Women’s dreams meanwhile contain an equal number of men and women. As you would imagine, men generally had more aggressive feelings and themes in their dreams than women. Children on the other hand, started with fairly non-aggressive dreams in general, but saw an increase when they hit their teens.

Sociologists have found parallels with sleep/dream research and current theories on gender and gender role comparisons in aggressive behaviour. The latest dream thinking suggests that a there is continuity between our conscious, waking personalities and the unconscious traits and features of our dreams.

Interesting Dream Facts

• Dream interpretations date back to around 3000-4000 BC, when they were documented on clay tablets. People believed that dreams were the result of spirits trying to contact them.
• The Bible has over seven hundred references to dreams.
• The Greeks and Romans believed that dreams contained messages from the Gods or the dead. They also believed dreams had the power to predict the future. Such was their importance that political and military leaders had their own dream interpreters to help with war strategy!
• The healing power of dreams was a main focus of the Helllenistic period. The ill were sent to sleep in special temples, as people believed they would be sent cures through their dreams.
• In Egyptian times, people who had vivid or significant dreams were believed to be blessed and considered special, while those who could interpret dreams were seen as divinely gifted.
• The Chinese believed that when you sleep, the soul leaves the body and enters the dream world. If a person was suddenly awoken from their slumber, the soul may fail to return to the body and be lost forever!
• In the Middle Ages, dreams were seen as a sign of the devil. When you were at your most vulnerable (i.e. sleeping), the devil could fill you mind with evil thoughts and mislead you down a ‘wrong path’.

Themes in Dreams

The most common themes in dreams, according to the latest studies, include:

Being chased
Sexual experiences
Falling
Being late for important events
Relatives/Friends dying
Flying
Exam Failure
Motoring accidents

A high percentage of dreams are also set at school or work, whilst around twelve percent of people dream only in black and white. Despite what the media and other sources may tell you, dreams of a sexual nature are not as prevalent as you would expect. In fact there is little difference between the sexual content of men and women’s dreams. Young to mid-teens are the most likely to have dreams containing sexual imagery or suggestion, but even then, they often only occur less than 10% of the time.
