Sleep Apnoea is a sleeping disorder that affects breathing during sleep. These episodes are characterized with pauses in breath and can occur up to 400 times a night in some severe cases. Sleep Apnoea can be diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called Polysomnogram and is usually defined when a 10 or more second interval between breaths occurs.

There are two kinds of Sleep Apnoea: obstructive apnoea and central apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnoea have this type of apnoea. If you have obstructive apnoea, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. When you try to breathe, you can’t get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles.

Despite the serious effects that Sleep Apnoea can cause, individuals are usually unaware of the symptoms even after awaking. Symptoms may be present for years and sufferers merely accustom themselves to the daytime fatigue caused by severe sleep disturbance. The disorder is more often recognised by others witnessing the individual during a sleep apnoea episode.

Doctors who have researched Sleep Apnoea say the disorder is a lot more common than people think, with estimated figures of 10% of the population suffering from some level of Sleep Apnoea. The disorder is a lot more common in individuals over the age of 40 but can affect any age group and at any time of the life cycle.

Sleep Apnoea can become quite dangerous if left untreated, you are more likely to have heart problems in later life and the onset of a stroke is a far greater risk in sleep apnea sufferers.

A few simple changes to the individual’s lifestyle can help improve Sleep Apnoea. Stop all use of alcohol or sleep medicines. These relax the muscles in the back of your throat, making it harder for you to breathe. If you smoke, quit smoking. If you are overweight, lose weight. Sleep on your side instead of on your back. These simple changes can seriously improve the severity and commonness of the attacks.
