5 Easy Ways to Prepare Your Home For Christmas Guests

Christmas is all about spending time with those we care about. It doesn’t matter what presents are under the tree or what dinner is on the table, so long as we can laugh, cheer and reminisce with the people we hold most dearly.

Having said that, you still need to get into the Christmas spirit! If you’re hosting guests this Christmas, preparing your home for them will ensure everyone is catered for and create the Christmassy atmosphere everyone looks forward to.

Here are five easy ways to prepare your home for Christmas guests:

Guest beds

If you have people stopping over, comfortable guest beds are essential – the last thing you want is guests getting a rough night’s sleep!

Here are some pro tips:

  • In guest rooms with a bed already, lay on the mattress. Does it squeak, have lumps or sag in the middle? If it does, it’s time to get a new mattress because your old one is spent. Shop our range of mattresses here.
  • If your guest bedroom has a small double or a single bed, consider upsizing to a double bed to give guests more sleeping space.
  • In small bedrooms with no space for a double, consider a day bed or sofa bed that opens out to create a double bed.

Guests will thank you in the morning!

Make space

With more people in your home than normal, you need to make space. Thankfully, there are a few quick wins to free up space for guests.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Move bulky furniture from the middle of rooms to the sides (or better yet, out of sight) to increase floor space.
  • Upgrade your dining table from one large unit to a smaller extendible unit, so you can free up floor space without sacrificing dining space.
  • Move Christmas decorations to the wall – freestanding decorations take up space and only get in the way. Alternatively, stick them in the corner.

Break out the welcome lights

Wall and window lights are great ways to welcome guests. You can also hang up unique string lights to guide guests to your house, should they be new to visiting you.

You can pick up some great Christmas lights for cheap at places like The Range and B&M. We love nutcrackers, reindeers and polar bear decorations, but nothing beats a giant Santa in the garden. Go big or go home!

Cakes, cakes and more cakes

Who doesn’t love cake? Psychopaths, that’s who! There’s a cake for everyone, from lemon drizzle to carrot cake and chocolate cake.

Cupcakes are the best kind of cake for Christmas because they are hand-sized and don’t require fussing about with a knife. Consider getting these made professionally to guarantee a luscious, soft sponge, or buy from a bakery.

You can also get Christmas pudding cupcakes, the ultimate handheld treat! Pair them with a cheese board, and you’ll satisfy all guests.

Prepare your bathroom

Let’s face it, Christmas day is hectic, so when people retreat to the bathroom, it’s nice for them to be able to take a breather.

Here’s how to prepare your bathroom:

  • Air freshener. Get at least two types and make sure they are accessible so that people can use them.
  • Candles. A candle does wonders for ambience! Light a scented candle in your bathroom and check in on it regularly to ensure it’s still lit.
  • Towels. You need lots of towels – hand towels, bath towels, fingertip towels. Guests always need to have a dry towel available.
  • Bins. People need places to put their toiletries and litter. Make sure you have a bin in your bathroom. A pedal bin is best for hygiene.
  • Soap and hand wash. Put a regular bar of soap by the sink and a squeezy bottle of liquid soap for sensitive skin so guests have options.
  • Toilet roll. Keep a basket of toilet rolls on the floor or stack a few toilet rolls on your cistern. Trust us; you will run out of toilet roll!

Enjoy yourself

Hosting guests is stressful, so remember to enjoy yourself. Delegate tasks when possible, and don’t forget to make time for you.
