Given that we spend so much of our lives doing it, it’s strange that scientists don’t yet fully understand what’s happening while we sleep. We know it’s vitally important for physical health and mental wellbeing, but the exact processes through which sleep regenerates, heals and revitalises us are only partly understood.

 Rejuvenation

Bones, nerves and muscles are rejuvenated during sleep, and the mind is thought to use dreaming as a method of sorting through the random pieces of information we’ve acquired recently. All vertebrates including fish have been observed sleeping; even some insects are known to indulge in some form of sleep, so it’s obviously a fundamental necessity.

 Healthy Sleep

Sleep disorders, then, are unpleasant and often unhealthy. They range from insomnia (which can have many different causes) to its opposite, hypersomnia; the tendency to sleep more than is necessary (or socially acceptable!) Some of these conditions require medical attention, which can include therapy and/or medication.

What’s obvious is that creating the right environment for sleep is a step in the right direction, particularly given the busy, stressful lives that so many of us lead these days. Buying the right mattress is one of the most important decisions we can make, and it pays to do a little research before you make that purchase.

Mattress Types

For example, are you a side sleeper, or do you generally find yourself sleeping on your front? Softer mattresses are often more comfortable for people who sleep on their side, while front sleepers will tend to get on better with a firm mattress. Most people who sleep on their backs find that a medium mattress is best, though some prefer a firm one. Double mattresses of different firmness on either side are available for couples with differing needs.

So which type of mattress is best for you? A decent spring mattress should last up to a decade, given the recommended care, including regular rotation. Memory foam or latex mattresses can last twice as long in ideal circumstances. While memory foam mattresses are more expensive initially, they provide excellent support for those with, for example, joint pain. Some foams now come with faster response times, meaning that the foam itself re-moulds to a new sleeping position more quickly.

Treat Yourself!

With Christmas coming up, why not treat yourself - or your loved ones - to a new mattress. It’s an unusual gift, but one that’ll be appreciated for years to come! Bedstar has a fantastic selection of mattresses as always; the Visco Therapy Memory Foam 6000 4’6” double mattress, for example, is £160 with free delivery. Don’t forget, Bedstar’s Winter Sale is now on, with up to 70% off many items.
