Best Mattresses For Edge Support

Good edge support lets you sleep right at the edge of a mattress without squishing and making you feel like you might fall off. This enables you to use the whole bed without sacrificing comfort and support.

Another benefit of edge support is that it requires a rigid support system within the mattress. A strict support system helps isolate movement (motion transfer) and stops roll-together (where the mattress sinks in the middle).

We firmly believe that any mattress worth its salt should have good edge support, but not all mattresses have it. Poor edge support can be a symptom of lousy mattress design or a by-product of the composition.

The best mattresses for edge support are sprung mattresses with an encapsulated body – these hold together at the edge brilliantly.

The problem of poor edge support mainly affects pure foam mattresses because these do not have reinforced edges. Without encapsulation or framing, foam mattresses suffer at the edge, so most foam mattresses are on the firmer side.

Hybrid mattresses can also have poor edge support if they have compact spring systems below thick layers of foam. Sometimes, soft foam layers compress too much before hitting the springs, squishing the edge several inches.

Even pocket-sprung and open coil mattresses can have poor edge support if the spring system is not sufficiently loaded with foam to encapsulate it. This happens because the springs move out of shape.

Our mattress recommendations for edge support

With all that in mind, we’ve listed our favourite mattresses for edge support below, listed by firmness (soft to firm). All of our picks are based on real-world testing and user feedback.

Two thousand adapt mini springs adjust to your body’s pressure points, while 2,500 pocket springs deliver exceptional support. A 4cm layer of charcoal-bamboo memory foam helps keep you cool on muggy nights by dissipating heat.
