How to Make Your Bedroom Extra Cosy

Cosy bed for winter nights

A cosy bedroom is beautiful, but how many of us can honestly say our bedrooms provide that warm, fuzzy feeling?

Your mattress and bed might be super comfy, but there’s more to cosiness than where you sleep – you also need storage to de-clutter, colours that make you happy, and textures you adore touching, like jute rugs and velvet curtains.

And let’s not forget how different lighting and aromas can change the look and feel of our bedrooms for every season and occasion.

Here’s how you can make your bedroom extra cosy:

Get a Comfortable Mattress

pocket spring mattress with memory gel is a fantastic starting point because it offers better cooling qualities than standard memory foam mattresses. The Sleepeezee Jessica and the Giltedge Energise 2,000 are decent options.

Another option is a latex mattress like the Silentnight Lift Renew 1,200 and the luxurious Silentnight Lift Replenish 2,000 – a higher spring count means better support and motion isolation (perfect for couples).

Latex foam is bouncier than memory foam, so it’s a more responsive sleep surface better suited to people who toss and turn frequently.

Make a Layered Bed

A layered bed has five layers:

  • Fitted sheet.
  • Top sheet.
  • Duvet.
  • Coverlet/throw.
  • Pillows/cushions.

You don’t need anything else to create a layered bed. The most important part is how the duvet set and cushions complement one another. It’s usually best to have a plain bedspread and introduce patterns and bold colours with cushions.

How many pillows should you use? Go for two pillows per side for a double bed and three for a king. Try to arrange them so that both sides are at an equal height. Use a plain coverlet to complete the look if your duvet has a pattern.

De-clutter your bedroom

Don’t underestimate the power of a tidy and organised bedroom. De-cluttering clears the mind and reduces friction and annoyance by making it easy to find things.

Use helpful storage solutions, such as an ottoman bed, under-bed drawers, top-of-wardrobe boxes, and over-door storage for your bits and bobs.

Another top tip, if you watch TV in bed, is to get a TV Bed – these have a TV mount built into the footboard to keep everything tidy.

Make Lighting Dimmable

The best way to give your bedroom a custom ambience is with dimmable lighting. You can buy dimmable floor and table lamps with touch-activated bedside lamps, which is the best option, so you don’t have to mess around with a wired switch.

Your main lighting can also run off a dimmer switch, which you can wire in yourself after turning off the circuit—an electrician can also do it for you. Dimmer switches work great; you can use smart bulbs for voice control.

Soundproofing

You can make your bedroom quieter by replacing your hollow core door with a solid core door. Solid core doors can reduce sound transmission by around 25%, and if you get an FD30 one, it’ll also be fire-rated for extra protection.

You can seal your bedroom door with foam sticky strips on the frame to reduce hallway sounds and get a lock for privacy.

Reducing sounds from the floor above is impossible without cutting out the plasterboard and installing insulated plasterboard or insulation board – an expensive project that won’t have as much impact as simply using a thicker rug above.

Aromatherapy

Scents that make you feel right at home, like lavender, eucalyptus, and orange zest, will transform your bedroom into a sanctuary, and the best way to flood your bedroom with delicious scents is with an electronic air diffuser (the kind that uses water and oil drops to vaporise the scent). Alternatively, scented candles work well if they are of good quality.

Aromatherapy is fantastic because you can instantly change how your bedroom feels and celebrate different seasons and occasions like Christmas.
