Everybody at the moment is raving on about this composition that is meant to put you to sleep. Nope, it’s not a Derren Brown stunt, it’s an actual piece of music created by some bloke called Max Richter.

Now, for those of you who aren’t really accustomed to the works of Max Richter then we’ll do our best to fill you in.

Richter is known, according to Spotify, for ‘blending classical, electronic and rock influences into a style he calls “post-classical.’ You could describe him as a Slash-Mozart hybrid-combo but then again, that’s just a little weird. He basically takes what we know as ‘classical’ music and makes it a bit edgy.

His latest pieces ‘Sleep’ - an eight hour long composition - and the more succinct ‘From Sleep’ - which comes in at around an hour long - have been revered by critics and the public alike.

The first thing to note here is that these pieces are meant to be listened to whilst falling asleep, obviously, hence the name. ‘Sleep’ is designed to take you through the night, starting as you drift off and bringing you into the morning as you arise. Of course, for the six hours in between Richter could pretty get away with  anything he wants - Do-Re-Me’ maybe? ‘Doe, a deer, a female deer…’ Uptown Funk is probably in there somewhere.

Of course, it’s all rather good and he’s got a big pat on the back from everybody in the industry who still listens to classical-come-modern music. He even did an eight hour performance on Radio 3, which was great for the first few hours but tailed off as everyone fell asleep.

But if you’re after something to fall asleep then why don’t you pick up his CD from any good stockist (iTunes).

Just don’t play it in the car - you’ve been warned.
