Bed Rotting - What is this TikTok self-care trend?

Bed rotting is a TikTok trend where you spend time in bed watching TV, scrolling through social media, or simply doing nothing - the perfect form of intentional unproductivity.

It’s unapologetic laziness, where you do nothing instead of working out and doing things that'll benefit your health. The phrase is famous among Generation Z (Zoomers) and came from social media.

Are you Generation Z, Millennial, or X?

As you may think, defining the two generations is based entirely on dates—in this case, years.

A Millennial is anyone born between 1980 and 1995.

A member of Gen Z is anyone born between 1996 and the early-mid 2000s.

Generation X, or Gen X, is typically used to describe the generation born between 1965 and 1980.

Is "bed rotting" bad for you?

Bed rotting has a few adverse effects on your body:

  • You can gain weight from a lower active calorie burn.
  • Moving less makes you more prone to aches and pains.

Excessive bed rotting is also problematic when it interferes with your life or becomes a means of escaping deeper emotions, which could signal mental health issues like depression that warrant professional attention.

The good side of "bed rotting".

Humans aren't designed for constant activity; our biological needs require adequate downtime. Sleep is the golden ticket, but bed rotting can help you recover from physical and mental exertion.

Bed rotting is also a fantastic way to recharge your "social battery" or relieve stress after demanding workdays.

It offers a form of unstructured rest that can rejuvenate your mind and body, even if you end up on your phone all morning.

Making the most of "bed rotting"

Comfort is what you want from a good bed rotting sesh.

The key ingredients:

A supportive mattress

The Giltedge Beds Comfort 1000 has 1,000 pocket springs for zoned support and a deep memory foam layer for comfort. It's rated medium, perfect for side sleepers and people weighing 130 to 170 lbs.

The Relyon Elite Deluxe, Elite Superb, and Elite Supreme models start at around £500 for a king size. Up to 1,400 pocket springs and wool comfort layers provide an affordable introduction to Relyon's build quality and comfort.

Gel layers like the Silentnight Geltex 3,000 Affluent, temperature-regulating foams, and breathable fibres help maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Pocket springs are the best for edge support and motion isolation, so if you have a sleeping partner, browse our complete range for ideas.

Breathable bedding

Hollowfibre is the best material for duvets because it's breathable, hypoallergenic, and extremely warm at higher togs.

Chopped microfibre is another excellent choice for a 'feels like down' effect, or you can go for down + feather bedding if you aren't allergic.

Your pillows should support your sleep position – firm for side sleepers, medium for back sleepers, and soft (or no pillow) for front sleepers.

Silentnight Ultrabounce pillows are a fantastic option if you want a medium pillow. They also make a Quilted Duck Feather pillow.

Stacks of cushions

Bed rotting means sitting up and doing things like scrolling on your phone and watching TV, so layer your bed with pillows and cushions.

Full-body pillows are fantastic for sticking between your legs, sitting up against, or adding smaller cushions with different textures.

Bed frames

You can enjoy a good rot with any bed frame, but TV beds hold a special place in our hearts for the ultimate multimedia experience.

TV beds provide the ultimate vantage point, with your TV only about 6 feet away. The fantastic thing is that your TV is completely hidden when not in use, rising from the footboard at your command for a perfect viewing experience.

Check out the Star TV Edge if you want the works - this brilliant TV bed boasts 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos surround sound, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports.

Another option is the Sweet Dreams Cosmo, which supports TVs up to 32” with a gorgeous, buttoned headboard perfect for glamorous bedrooms.

Bed rotting bliss awaits whichever TV bed you choose.
