Our Favourite Headboards To Transform Any Bed

Reading Time: 4 minutes

You can transform your old divan or ottoman bed without breaking the bank with a new headboard - determine the fixing type (strutted, floor-standing, or wall-mounted) and match it to your bed frame.

You might want to replace your headboard because it’s damaged, or you fancy a change. We have a massive collection of headboards in various styles and colours to match your bedroom décor and tastes.

Some people like to match their headboard to their bed frame colour, while others prefer a contrasting colour to create a focal point. You can also use contrasting textures to create a layered look that oozes class and sophistication.

Are they strutted, standing, or wall-mounted?

Before jumping into our favourite headboards, look at the back of your old headboard to determine the fixing type.

A strutted headboard attaches to the frame, while a floor-standing headboard fixes and stands on the floor. These can be interchanged, but matching the fixing type to your bed will ensure the best results. Wall-mounted headboards are anchored to the wall and do not require fixing the bed frame.

Also, double-check the headboard size before buying (basically, if you have a double bed, get a headboard for a double bed).

The best headboards to transform your bed

Without further ado, these are our favourite headboards to transform your bed:

Giltedge Beds Chloe - £114 double, strutted

The Giltedge Beds Chloe is a velvet headboard with a diamond-quilted stitch and buttoned finish. It’s 61cm high, so ideal for thick mattresses.

Tips for choosing the perfect headboard

  • Make sure the headboard is high enough for your mattress from the base. If you have a thick mattress, you need a taller headboard. Mattresses under 28cm do well, with a headboard at least 58cm high.
  • Padding is an important feature! If you want to be comfortable sitting in bed, go for the thickest headboard possible. The Giltedge Beds Monte Carlo is a top choice for plush padding.
  • If your bedroom is small in length, consider a thinner headboard to save a few centimetres of floor space (thicker headboards push the bed out). The Giltedge Beds Katie is a good option with a simple, elegant design.
  • Velvet looks like a high-maintenance material, but it is easier to look after than fabric. It is naturally water-repellent and won’t fray; it also looks beautiful when freshly brushed, giving off a luxurious vibe.
  • You can usually substitute a floor-standing headboard with a strutted headboard and vice versa, but not always. Before mixing and matching, ask us for clarification so you get the right headboard and fixing kit.
  • Not sure what fabric you want? You can request up to six fabric samples on any product page, and we’ll send them out the next day for free.
  • We also sell divan bases with headboards if you want a bed package. You can see our complete range of divan bases.
