How To Plan a Bedroom Makeover 2022

Planning a bedroom makeover is incredibly exciting, so much so that you probably look at ideas before bed and dream about your grand designs.

But putting everything into action can be stressful, especially when there are so many things to consider, from colours and textures to functionality.

The trick is to simplify things into stages. Our bedrooms tend to be the most neglected rooms in our house, but they require careful planning. This article will show you how to plan a bedroom makeover correctly.

Stage 1: Blueprints

The first stage is measuring your bedroom and drawing blueprints so that you can determine the best layout for furniture. Blueprints are crucial if you want to maximise space and liveability.

You can find blueprint ideas at Dimensions. Here’s an example blueprint:

As you can see, the bedroom is drawn in an accurate shape, and the furniture is scaled in, giving you a clear idea of what will fit.

Stage 2: Pick a design theme

While we are all unique, our interior tastes fall into categories. Designing Ideas has a great list of bedroom styles. We love the traditional manner, where comfort and function take pride of place, but you might prefer a modern style.

Stage 3: Pick a colour scheme

The next step is choosing a colour scheme. We do this after selecting the design theme to personalise your interior style and make it your own.

The 60-30-10 rule is the best way to get colours right — 60% is the primary colour, 30% is a secondary colour, and 10% is a backup colour (usually something bright). By balancing the colours, you create cohesion and balance.

Home BNC has a list of lovely bedroom colour schemes. We like neutral tones like greys and beiges with a pop of purple.

Stage 4: Buy your furniture

Your bedroom needs a bed, a chest of drawers, and a wardrobe. You can get bedside tables and a dresser if your bedroom is big enough.

The trick with bedroom furniture is to match the colours; doing so will give you cohesion and ensure nothing looks out of place.

However, it would help if you also thought about practicality. You need ample storage space for all your stuff and, ideally, enough to grow into.

Wooden and metal bed frames are popular, but a divan or ottoman bed is even better if space is a priority. Divans and ottomans free up floor space with a base the same size as the mattress. They also have in-built storage (drawers in divans and a lift-up bed base with ottomans).

Stage 5: Buy your décor

Buying rugs, floor-standing lamps, and décor after furniture will ensure everything fits. With your furniture in place, you have the bare shell of a bedroom and can make good design decisions for your décor.

Your décor will follow the theme of your chosen interior style. For instance, the bohemian style calls for natural, rough materials, while the Scandinavian style calls for functional décor with clean lines and sleep geometry.

Stage 6: Let there be light

Lighting should last in your design because your furniture and décor will reveal the best way to play with it. It could be that your opulent ceiling light will no longer provide the ambience you want, and spotlights are a better option.

Dimmer switches are essential because they let you change the ambience of your bedroom, and spotlights above your bed are also an excellent choice for reading.

Under-bed LED strips, fairy lights hanging from the ceiling, and smart bulbs are great ways to get creative with lighting.

Also, don’t neglect natural light – installing a wider window can work wonders, or you can get white blinds to reflect more light into your bedroom. Mirrors can also increase light in your bedroom when placed strategically.
