Beds FAQs
Everything you need to know before you buy
What types of beds are available?
The main bed types are divan beds, bed frames, ottoman beds, bunk beds and sofa beds. Divan beds sit on a fabric-upholstered base and often include built-in storage. Bed frames are the traditional style with a headboard, footboard and slatted base. Ottoman beds have a lift-up base that reveals large storage underneath. Bunk beds stack two sleeping surfaces vertically and are ideal for children's rooms or shared spaces. Sofa beds double as seating during the day. Each type suits different needs, room sizes and budgets.
What bed size do I need?
UK bed sizes run from small single (75 x 190cm) and single (90 x 190cm) for one person, to small double (120 x 190cm) and double (135 x 190cm) for couples in smaller rooms, up to king size (150 x 200cm) and super king (180 x 200cm) for those who want maximum space. As a rule, allow at least 60cm of clearance around the bed on the sides you'll walk past, and measure your room before buying — a king size bed can feel very different in a 3m x 3m room compared to a 4m x 4m one.
What's the difference between a bed frame and a divan bed?
A bed frame is a freestanding structure — typically with a headboard, side rails and a slatted base — that holds the mattress above the floor. Divan beds have a solid or sprung upholstered base that sits directly on the floor on castors, with the mattress on top. Bed frames tend to make more of a style statement and suit a wider variety of room aesthetics. Divan beds are more practical — they're lower profile, offer built-in storage options, and generally provide a more even, consistent support surface for the mattress.
Do I need a special mattress for my bed frame?
Most standard mattresses are compatible with most bed frames — the critical factor is size. Beyond that, slatted frames with slats more than 7cm apart are not suitable for some mattress types, particularly memory foam and pocket spring mattresses, as the gaps can cause the mattress to sag and wear unevenly. If your slats are widely spaced, a solid base board insert will resolve the issue. Adjustable bed frames require a specialist flexible mattress — a standard spring mattress cannot bend safely around an articulating base.
What is an ottoman bed and is it worth it?
An ottoman bed has a base that lifts up — either from the side or the end — to reveal a large storage area underneath. The entire depth of the base is usable storage, making it one of the highest-capacity storage solutions available for a bedroom without taking up any additional floor space. Ottoman beds are particularly popular in flats and smaller homes. They do cost more than a plain bed frame or divan, but for bedrooms where storage is at a premium the investment is usually well worthwhile.
How do I choose the right bed for a small bedroom?
In a small bedroom, prioritise beds that make the most of the available space. A divan with ottoman storage or drawers removes the need for separate storage furniture. A lower-profile bed — a divan or low-frame bed — makes the room feel more open than a high-sided frame. Avoid beds with large footboards in rooms where floor space is tight. If the room is very small, a small double (120 x 190cm) is worth considering over a standard double — it's 15cm narrower and can make a significant difference to how the room feels.
What is the best bed for back pain?
The mattress matters far more than the frame for back pain, but the base plays a role too. A solid platform-top divan provides even, consistent support for a quality mattress. For back pain sufferers, the most important things are choosing a medium-firm mattress with good spinal support — pocket spring, hybrid or memory foam are all worth considering — and ensuring it sits on a base that supports it evenly across the full surface. Avoid very soft mattresses or old bases with broken slats that allow the mattress to sag.
How long should a bed last?
The divan base or bed frame itself can last 15 to 20 years with normal use. The mattress is typically the first component to need replacing, usually after 8 to 12 years for a quality pocket spring or memory foam mattress. Signs that your mattress needs replacing include visible sagging, waking with aches and stiffness, or a mattress that no longer returns to shape after you get up. When replacing the mattress, it's worth assessing the base at the same time — a worn or damaged base will shorten the life of a new mattress.
Are wooden bed frames sturdy enough for everyday use?
Quality solid wood and engineered wood bed frames are very sturdy and suitable for everyday long-term use. The key is build quality — solid hardwood frames (oak, pine, walnut) are the most durable, while engineered wood or MDF frames at a lower price point can be equally stable if well-constructed. Look for frames with a centre support bar on larger sizes (double and above), as this prevents the slatted base from bowing over time. Poorly made frames with thin slats or weak joinery can creak and loosen with use, so it's worth investing in a reputable brand.
Can I use a headboard on a divan bed?
Yes — most divan bases include a headboard bracket on the back panel so you can attach a headboard at any time. Headboards are typically sold separately, giving you the freedom to choose a style and fabric that suits your room. Divan headboards come in a wide range of styles from simple upholstered panels to statement winged or buttoned designs. Some headboards are floor-standing and don't require a frame attachment at all, making them compatible with any base. Always check that the headboard you're buying is designed to fit your base size.
What bed is best for children?
For younger children, a low-to-the-floor bed frame or divan minimises the risk of injury if they fall or roll out during the night. Mid-sleeper and high-sleeper frames with guard rails work well for older children from around 6 years old, providing a play or study area underneath. Bunk beds are ideal for shared rooms and are generally suitable from around 6 years upwards for the top bunk. Look for frames that meet current UK safety standards and have sufficient guard rail height. As children grow, a single or small double frame gives them room to spread out.
What should I check before buying a bed online?
Measure your room carefully before ordering — account for the bed frame dimensions as well as the mattress, and leave adequate clearance on all walkable sides. Check whether the bed is supplied with a mattress or mattress only, and confirm the size — UK bed sizes are standardised but some imported frames use European dimensions that are slightly different. Check delivery details: some beds are delivered flat-packed for self-assembly, others are delivered assembled or in parts. If the bed includes storage, check whether the drawers are side or end opening to ensure they'll work in your room layout.
