What is a divan bed?
A divan bed consists of a mattress sitting on a fabric-upholstered base that rests directly on the floor on castors. Unlike a traditional bed frame, the base is a solid or sprung unit that doubles as the bed's foundation and — in most cases — its storage. Divan beds are one of the most popular choices in the UK because they're practical, supportive, space-efficient, and available in a huge range of sizes, fabrics and mattress combinations.
What's the difference between a platform top and a sprung edge divan base?
A platform top base has a solid, firm surface across the top — typically a rigid board covered in fabric. It provides consistent, even support across the full mattress and is the recommended base for most pocket spring and memory foam mattresses. A sprung edge base has springs built into the sides and edges of the base, adding a softer, more giving feel around the perimeter. Some sleepers prefer the extra give of a sprung edge, but a platform top is generally the better all-round choice for mattress longevity and support consistency.
What storage options are available on divan beds?
Divan beds come with a variety of storage configurations. A plain base has no storage at all. Two-drawer options typically place one drawer on each side, or both on the same side if access is restricted. Four-drawer bases maximise drawer storage and work well in larger rooms. Ottoman bases lift the entire mattress to reveal a large storage space underneath — ideal for bulky items like bedding and seasonal clothing. Ottoman bases come in side-opening or end-opening configurations depending on your room layout.
Do I need a headboard with a divan bed?
A headboard isn't structurally necessary — a divan bed is a complete, usable bed without one. However, a headboard adds a finished look, protects the wall from scuffs, and gives you something to lean against when reading or watching TV in bed. Most divan beds come with a headboard fixing on the back of the base so you can add one at any time. Headboards are usually sold separately, giving you the freedom to choose a style that suits your bedroom without being tied to a particular design.
What size divan bed do I need?
The right size depends on your room dimensions and whether you sleep alone or with a partner. A double (135 x 190cm) is the most popular UK choice for couples in standard bedrooms. A king size (150 x 200cm) gives noticeably more width and length and is worth the step up if your room allows it. A super king (180 x 200cm) is the most spacious option for couples who need plenty of room. Single (90 x 190cm) and small double (120 x 190cm) sizes work well for single sleepers or smaller rooms.
Can I choose any mattress for a divan base?
In most cases yes — divan bases are compatible with the majority of mattress types including pocket spring, memory foam, memory gel, open coil and hybrid. The main consideration is the base type: a platform top base suits almost any mattress and is the most versatile option. If you're buying a divan set, the base and mattress are already matched to work together. If you're replacing just the mattress on an existing divan, ensure the new mattress is the same size and check the manufacturer's guidance on recommended base types.
Are divan beds good for storage in small bedrooms?
Divan beds are one of the best storage solutions for small bedrooms precisely because the storage is built into the bed itself — it doesn't take up any additional floor space. An ottoman divan in particular can hold a significant amount — equivalent to a large chest of drawers — without adding a single square metre to your room's footprint. This makes them especially popular in flats, children's rooms, and guest rooms where floor space is limited.
How long does a divan bed last?
The divan base itself is extremely durable and will typically last 15 to 20 years or more. It's usually the mattress that needs replacing first — most quality pocket spring or memory foam mattresses last 8 to 12 years. When the mattress reaches the end of its life, you can simply replace it without replacing the base, making a divan a very cost-effective long-term investment. Signs the base needs replacing include visible sagging, broken springs (on sprung edge bases), or damage to the fabric or frame.
Can a divan bed be split for delivery?
Yes — most divan bases in double, king and super king sizes are supplied as two separate halves that bolt or link together once in position. This makes delivery significantly easier, particularly for houses with narrow staircases, tight landings or difficult access. The join between the two halves is hidden under the mattress and has no effect on the sleeping surface. If you have a particularly challenging access route, it's worth checking with us at the point of order so we can advise on delivery options.
What fabric options are available for divan beds?
Divan bases are upholstered in a wide range of fabrics to suit any bedroom décor. Common options include plain weave fabrics in neutral tones such as grey, slate, cream and natural, as well as richer colours and textured finishes. Many brands offer velvet, chenille or bouclé options for a more premium look. The fabric covers the visible sides and panels of the base, so it's worth choosing a colour and texture that works with your headboard and wider bedroom scheme.
