As the days grow shorter and cold weather sets in, having a bedroom you can’t wait to get home helps beat the winter blues.
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a winter bedroom sanctuary—you can make better use of what you already have and apply small touches to make a big difference, although spending in some areas is worthwhile.
This article will reveal practical tips for transforming your bedroom into a winter sanctuary.
Divine textures
Upgrade your bedsheets to chunkier fabrics and opt for thicker, knitted throws. Thicker fabrics are a treat for the senses, helping make your bedroom look warmer and more homely. Best of all, you don’t need to spend a lot!
Upgrade your mattress
One of the best ways to make your bedroom more comfortable this winter is upgrading your mattress to one that supports how you sleep.
If your mattress is over ten years old, it’s due to be upgraded, and there are plenty of options for every budget!
The key is to get a mattress that doesn’t sink when you lay on it—you need support to align your back and hips. Most people will be fine with a medium mattress, or you can go for a medium-soft mattress if you weigh under 130 lbs.
Memory foam mattresses offer sublime comfort, or if you are a hot sleeper, a memory gel mattress will keep you cooler. Hybrid mattresses combine foam and pocket springs, offering a bouncier bed experience with a soft, compressible topper.
Winter bedding
You can get lusciously thick winter bedding to improve your duvet’s thermal quality. It’s most often made from thick cotton or linen, but you can also get faux fur bedding from a lovely microfibre.
Beat the cold
Temperature plays a crucial role in how lovely your bedroom is. Our favourite way to heat a bedroom is with an oil-filled radiator. It draws only 1.5kW, so it costs around 21p per hour to run. These tend to be better than fan heaters, providing more even heat.
You should check your windows for gaps and fill these with weatherstrips, and you can improve the thermal quality of glazing with a thermal insulation film.
Try installing a door weather bar at the bottom of your door and fill the gap between the door and frame with a sticky weather strip. These small changes will keep your bedroom warm! Your door will leak heat into the hallway if it isn’t tightly sealed.
Candles are your friend.
Candles are essential winter warmers, bringing physical and visual warmth to your bedroom. The beauty of candles is they are dirt cheap and available in various lush scents that will warm you up, like cinnamon and spiced orange.
Make a beautiful, layered bed.
Layering your bed is an easy and fun way to transform your bedroom into a cosy winter sanctuary. A layered bed has five basic layers:
- Fitted sheet
- Top sheet
- Duvet
- Coverlet
- Pillows/cushions
You probably have everything you need already!
The best way to layer your bed for winter is with knitted cushions and a chunky coverlet/throw. We also recommend a bolster pillow, which runs across the width of your bed to provide additional support when sitting upright.
Don’t forget about your feet!
A shaggy or faux fur rug is the finishing touch your winter bedroom needs because you can’t beat the sensation of getting out of bed onto a soft rug!
Get a rug that compliments your colour scheme so it blends into your bedroom. The best place for a rug is beside your bed, so it’s the first thing your feet touch in the morning, but a rug placed at the entryway is also a good choice.
Lastly, if you’re lucky enough to need new flooring, electric underfloor heating will transform your winter bedroom sanctuary into a space you can’t wait to get home to.
