6 Headboards to Transform Your Divan Bed
If you have a divan bed frame, you can change the headboard and transform the way it looks without breaking the bank.
Headboards are available in hundreds of styles and colours and are user-replaceable without any risk of damaging the bed.
There are three types of fixings for headboards:
- Floor standing, where the headboard stands directly on the floor and is fixed to the divan base via pre-drilled holes. Floor-standing headboards have a fixed height and are the best option for adding height.
- Strutted, where the headboard fixes to the base and doesn’t touch the floor. A strutted headboard is ideal if you need a shorter headboard or have uneven flooring that makes it difficult to get things flush.
- Wall-mounted, where the headboard fixes to the wall and is independent of the bed frame (these are relatively rare).
Most people should buy a floor-standing or strutted headboard, and your divan base probably already has holes drilled for the bolts. If it doesn’t, you can drill these but don’t do it until you know the width of the bolts.
Make sure whichever headboard you choose fits into your bedroom style because it will become the focal point. The last thing you want is a headboard that looks out of place!

Top tips for choosing the right headboard
- Consider your sleep height – your sleep height is your bed + mattress height (in other words, the height from the floor to the mattress). Your headboard should sit above this – at least 55cm.
- Consider upholstery feel – you can get headboards with velvet, crushed velvet, weave, linen, and teddy fabrics. You should specify one that is comfortable for you but not too warm or cold so that you don’t freeze or sweat sitting up against it.
- Check your divan base fixings – your divan base might have fixing holes for a headboard, but possibly not. If you need to drill holes, account for the headboard height, and don’t drill larger than the bolt size.
