Small Tweaks That Will Transform Your Bedroom Comfort

Bedroom comfort

A few simple tweaks could transform your bedroom into a sleep haven, and you don't need to do any heavy lifting or break the bank.

We all want a lovely bedroom - somewhere we can relax after a hard day, close our eyes, and forget about the world. This article will help you with tips to transform your bedroom into an incredibly comfortable space.

Let's jump in!

Get a plusher mattress to improve your sleep

Even if you like your mattresses on the firm side, you can get a firm mattress with plush comfort layers. Pillowtop mattresses are a good option, or you can choose a hybrid mattress with at least 3cm of memory foam.

If your mattress is too firm, get something softer – the natural transition is to go from firm to medium-firm or medium-firm to medium. Medium-soft mattresses are another option, but these are best for people under 130lbs.

Install a mattress topper

Don't have the money for a new mattress? Get a mattress topper! Mattress toppers are 2cm to 4cm thick and transform the feel of mattresses. If your bed is too firm, get a softer topper or vice versa if your mattress is too soft.

Another benefit to mattress toppers is that they improve memory foam mattresses' breathability, providing you don't get a memory foam mattress topper. A fibre topper is best for breathability and comfort.

Upgrade your duvet

While all-season duvets are good, they are awful during unseasonably hot weather and freezing nights. You need to invest in a summer duvet if you are overheating and kicking your duvet off at night. Summer duvets are 4.5 to 6 togs and are significantly better than all-season duvets in hot weather. If you feel cold in winter, get a winter duvet rated at least 13 togs – this will keep you nice and toasty at sub-zero

Upgrade your pillows

An uncomfortable pillow will keep you up at night! The key to a great pillow is the firmness level matching it to how you sleep.

Side and back sleepers do best with a firm memory foam pillow, while front sleepers do best with soft to soft-medium feather pillows.

Sleeping with two pillows is pointless and is not recommended – it is better to have one thicker, firmer pillow than two softer ones.

Invest in fantastic bedding

The fabrics you touch in bed play a critical role in bedtime comfort, and they should be soft, subtle, and breathable to keep you cool. Without these characteristics, bedding can reduce comfort and make you toss and turn.

Our favourite bedding material is 100% organic cotton (Egyptian cotton and other varieties are fine too). Second, we have linen, which is more breathable but thinner, and in last place, we have silk, which feels fussy.

Polycotton is another option for cheaper bedding, although it is less soft than cotton and can have an artificial feel.

Upgrade to dimmer switches

Dimmer switches are a simple trick to transform lighting. You can convert most light switches with a dimmer switch without wiring upgrades – all you need is a dimmer light fitting and dimmer bulbs rated for the wattage of the switch.

You can also get smart dimmer switches with Wi-Fi, letting you control your bedroom lighting with your smartphone. This takes lighting to another level, especially if you install multi-colored LED light bulbs.

Get down with aromatherapy!

Aromatherapy could be the ticket to better sleep and relaxation at bedtime. It involves diffusing essential oils into the air; all you need is an electronic diffuser and essential oils (lemon, lavender, peppermint, bergamot, chamomile, marjoram).

Studies show that aromatherapy works for many people, demonstrating relaxant qualities and helping with anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders.

Aromatherapy is worth trying if you struggle to sleep or your bedroom is plagued with lingering odours (dogs, smoke, etc.)...
