The summer holidays are just around the corner, which, as we know, is every parent’s favourite time of the year (hmmm!) It’s a daunting prospect to fill those endless days with fun and exciting activities, but how about combining practical with fun and doing a kid’s bedroom makeover.

It is a known fact that if children are involved in decorating and creating their rooms, they will almost certainly be happier spending time in there for play/chill time and sleep better. This is great for the child’s wellbeing and, let’s face it, pretty good for the grownups too.

Getting them involved from the initial planning to helping with the decoration; will be a fun and bonding project together.

Here are a few ideas for a super summer bedroom makeover:

• Invest in a new bed that is suitable for your child’s needs but also an exciting focal point. This could be a novelty bed for the younger ones, a study/storage bunk for the slightly older ones or even a bed with extra space to sleep, such as bunks or triple sleepers for those all-important sleepovers.

• Let the kids get creative. Things like canvases can be picked up relatively cheaply, and you can let the kids loose, perhaps out in the garden, to create their own artwork to hang in pride of place on the walls. This will brighten up the room and give a great sense of achievement when the work is proudly displayed.

• Create a chill-out zone. Find a cosy corner to set up an area tailored to their interests, whether reading, gaming, arts and crafts or simply relaxing with music. You just need a beanbag or other comfy seating option and a small space to fill with favourite things, and that’s it. The perfect personal space is created.

• Get foraging. There are many cool and interesting objects to be found in nature so get the kids out to the woods, fields and beaches or any space you have nearby and see what you can find. Strangely shaped branches, shiny pebbles and rocks, seashells and pinecones are all perfect for bringing the outdoors indoors and creating an organic display, all for free.

  • Light it up. String lights can be such a simple but effective way of adding glitz and sparkle to any room. You could hang them around the branch you foraged or fill up jars and bottles for a fairy garden feel.

  • Get crafting. This is very on-trend now. It’s very cheap and simple to create things like bunting to string around the room. Whether it’s flags, footballs, or fairies these are fun to make together and brighten up any room.
  • Create your own storage. There are great, colourful ways to create storage, such as upcycling old furniture using paint or coloured tapes. Another fun storage idea for the kids to put a stamp on involves hooks and canvas tote bags, decorate the bags with whatever you like and just fill them with all their favourite things. Simply hang on the hooks, and you have handmade storage that any child will be proud of.
