Old Bed & Mattress
Removal & Recycle service
Throwing a mattress topper onto your old mattress could extend its lifespan and give you a few extra months before replacement is necessary, although it depends on the problem with your old mattress.
For instance, a mattress topper will not help if your mattress has broken springs and major sagging. But if your mattress has lumpy comfort layers, a topper will help smooth out those annoying bumps.
You can also use a thicker mattress topper to mask bumps and dips - just don’t expect miracles. A mattress topper will still feel broken on an old, sagging, bumpy mattress, and you’ll want to replace it sooner rather than later.
Mattress toppers can be as thin as half a centimetre if they’re nothing but a waterproof sheet glued to some padding. These thin mattress toppers are fine if your mattress smells and is impossible to clean.
If your mattress has structural problems or broken materials, such as falling–apart foams, you need a more substantial topper.
Thin mattress toppers are cheap and cheerful solutions for covering dirty mattresses and providing a more hygienic sleep surface.
They don’t do anything to change the support of your mattress but can provide a slight change in firmness when pulled tight to the mattress.
Mattress toppers between 2 and 3 cm thick provide a noticeable change in mattress feel and can mask problems in your mattress’s comfort layer.
A firm mattress topper will provide the best results if you want to cover lumpy materials and minor inconsistencies in the comfort layers.
Thick mattress toppers between 5 and 8 cm significantly change your mattress’s feel and can hide more substantial problems.
A 5-8 cm mattress topper will stop springs from sagging, boost edge support, and provide motion isolation to transform your sleep experience.
Mattress toppers have firmness levels just like mattresses:
All of these can change the feel of your old mattress, which will be helpful if it is no longer comfortable.
For example, your old mattress might not support you enough to sleep on your back. A firm mattress topper will help restore that support to your bed.
There are a few more considerations when choosing the right mattress topper: strapping types and cleanability.
You want a mattress topper with elastic straps, which pull tight to the corners of your mattress to limit movement. Tie straps work only for lightweight toppers - if you’re looking at thick toppers, always go for elastic ties.
The removability of your mattress topper’s outer covers dictates how easy it is to clean. Look for mattress toppers with removable outer covers and easy-care instructions, such as machine washable at low temperatures.
A mattress topper can save your old mattress, but only to a point.
If your old mattress has a broken support system, such as broken springs or crumbling core support foam, you must replace it.
The good news is that mattress replacement doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Plenty of double and king size mattresses are under £400 and sometimes £300, with pocket springs and a combination of foams that provide a fantastic sleep experience.
