Mattress for keeping cool.

With Summer fast approaching and hopefully with sunshine in our sights, have you considered how to get a good night's sleep when the temperatures rise?

According to the National Sleep Federation, the optimum temperature for a good night's sleep is 15 to 19 degrees Celsius, but unfortunately, we can't control the weather. We have all tried opening windows, cooler bedding, cold showers before bed, and noisy fans, only to find ourselves still tossing and turning, struggling to sleep, but could a mattress be the answer to keeping cool?

So how could your mattress help? Memory foam mattresses have become increasingly popular over the years due to their ability to mould to the individual's body using body heat, making them extremely comfortable. However, this means the heat is retained, making them warmer than other mattresses.

What's the alternative? Pocket-sprung mattresses allow airflow to regulate your body temperature by allowing proper ventilation ensuring your temperature does not rise any higher than it should while sleeping.

Various pocket-sprung mattresses on the market strive to give you a more relaxed night's sleep. Pocket sprung mattresses can have anything from 1000 to 2000 individual springs that move separately, which aids any sleeping position by providing support as the scoring system allows for proper weight distribution. The number of springs enables the buyer to customise their mattress for better comfort; the more springs, the firmer the mattress.

So which mattress material should you choose to keep cool?

Pocket-sprung mattresses can be filled with natural materials such as cotton, wool, or coconut fibre which are more breathable and absorb moisture. More luxurious natural fillings such as Egyptian cotton, mohair, horsehair, and silk make the mattress feel cooler but have a much higher price tag. Pocket-sprung natural material mattresses provide good support and are very durable. However, they may not be suitable for allergy sufferers if they are not hypoallergenic.

Alternatively, pocket-sprung mattresses can be filled with synthetic materials such as latex or polyester, providing excellent cushioning properties. They are strong and naturally hypoallergenic. A pocket-sprung gel mattress combines the pocket-sprung element of a mattress with new gel technology, which responds to pressure rather than heat when moulding to the body, making it cooler whilst still providing a comfortable sleep by taking pressure off joints and muscles.

Here at Bedstar, we recommend the Sleepeezee Hybrid 2000 mattress with Staycool™ technology. It is a cooling and comfortable luxurious pocket-sprung gel mattress that provides a restful night's sleep night after night.
