Storing stuff under your bed in boxes is an easy way to free up space, but the novelty of pulling boxes out soon wears off. It is tiresome, and dust and pet hair accumulates under your bed, turning your bedroom into an allergy haven!
Storage beds are a superior solution, seamlessly building storage into your bed frame and eliminating the need for multiple under-bed boxes.
Here are a few of the benefits of getting a storage bed:
Storage beds come in three types:
Ottoman beds are the crème de la crème of storage beds, giving you enormous storage space spanning the length and width of the bed underside.
The way ottomans work is simple – the mattress platform sits on a hinge, letting you lift it. The lifting mechanism is a gas-strut, rated to support the platform + mattress weight (at least 200 pounds, with most over 250 pounds).
Ottomans can build storage into the frame with a boxed construction or have legs with an under-pan, giving you a more traditional look.
You also get an end-lift and side-lift with many bases, letting you choose a configuration that perfectly fits your space.
Here are a few ottoman bed recommendations:
Aspire Chesterfield Sleigh Bed (£469, king)
The bed's scroll headboard and footboard evoke a sense of class. The side-opening ottoman reveals a vast storage space for bedding, seasonal clothes, or anything else you want out of the way.
Bedmr Malmo Wooden Ottoman (£549, king)
The Bedmr Malmo is a wooden ottoman frame finished with modern grey paint. The natural trim on the headboard and footboard helps it stand out and blend in with traditional décor and furniture.
Drawers are a popular choice for storage because they are available with more traditional frames with drawers at the foot of the bed. Depending on the frame size, you can also get them in divan bases with two or four drawers.
Although you get significantly less storage than an ottoman, built-in drawers could be all you need for bedding, bits, and bats.
Most of our divan beds are specifiable with built-in drawers. Most double and king beds have drawers at the sides of the bed. Two drawers are standard in singles, with four offered with doubles, kings, and super king sizes.
Here are a few drawer bed recommendations:
Giltedge Divan (£259, king)
The Giltedge Divan is a stunning velvet bed with two or four side drawers or an enormous end drawer, and you can add a matching headboard.
Giltedge Westbury (£699, king)
This gorgeous velvet sleigh bed has an intricate buttoned finish with premium upholstery and chrome gliders for the floor. It's available with two or four drawers.
A slide store is an alternative to drawers on a divan bed; instead of drawers, you get a sliding door that uses the length of the bed as storage instead of the width.
Many prefer slide stores because sliding a lightweight door open is more manageable than opening a stuffed drawer. Slidestores are also lighter than beds with drawers, making them easier to shift around for hoovering and layout changes.
Another advantage to slide stores is that no drawers can take up space when pulled out, making them a better choice for small bedrooms.
Overall, ottomans offer the best storage solution, with drawers and slide stores offering similar storage with different benefits. All these options are superior to under-bed boxes, with the upgrade and cost well worth it.
