The two main storage bed types are ottoman beds, which have a lift-up platform, and beds with built-in drawers (usually two or four).

Ottoman beds offer around 4x more storage space than beds with drawers because the entire underside of the bed is storage. You lift the mattress with hydraulic struts, and you can choose an end- or side-lift layout with some models.

Beds with drawers have less storage than ottomans, but some prefer opening one drawer over a whole mattress platform.

How to choose the perfect storage bed

Storage depth

Your storage bed must be deep enough to accommodate bulky items like duvets, clothes, shoes, and plastic storage boxes.

Ottoman beds have a storage depth (such as 27 cm), and drawers do too – take note of these when shopping, and remember, the deeper, the better.

Bed frame size

If you go for an ottoman or divan bed with drawers, the mattress should be around the same length and width as the bed frame base. That means a king-size bed should resemble a standard double bed frame (give or take a few cm).

Measure your bedroom for the bed frame—not the mattress—and see what fits. You might be pleasantly surprised by the divans' space-saving footprint.

Materials

Storage beds are either wood or upholstered.

Wooden storage beds have a rustic and natural charm that perfectly suits traditional and farmhouse bedrooms. Plus, they are sturdy and built to last—the fabric can fray, but the wood is susceptible to dents and dings.

Fabric storage beds can be made of velvet, linen, faux leather, or teddy fabrics in virtually any colour. They offer more design choices than wooden bed frames, and the headboards are warm and comfortable to sit up against.
